Bathroom

The Bathroom is a movie that is a fly on the wall look at one bathroom as used by seven different people. Filmed entirely on location in the bathroom, all which is presented within the frame is the shower enclosure, the shower door, a radiator, a water boiler and a towel rail. Other bathroom furniture is visible though only partially in the form of an arm chair. The story begins with a typical morning scenario of a middle aged man, Chad brushing his teeth. The audiences are positioned within the medicine cabinet, behind a mirror, giving a clever perspective throughout the film. One by one the characters are introduced and we get to know them through their bathroom behavior. Director Ben Shaw controversially includes full frontal nudity in the film, in the process dramatically increasing the viewer appeal. It must be said that the plot is often lost to the cheap tactic of female character, Bronwyn repeatedly checking her nude form in the mirror, at the most ridiculous of times. It is however worth mentioning that without this added appeal, The Bathroom, the movie, would have very little. A poorly restricted narrative due to the fact it is filmed from one camera angle, and in a bathroom suite, leaves little room for variation. Ironically there is not a single scene where someone is singing in the shower enclosure come wet room. Featuring appearances by David Surey and Felicity List the films acting is quite acceptable, often commendable given the poor nature of story and character development. His first debut film, and almost certainly his last, Ben Shaw remains confident that the film will be remembered as an art house classic. We here at Fast Forward Theater, along with everyone else who has seen the film that we have spoken to, disagree.
